We begin to wonder why it is that we cannot control our drinking. We believe ourselves weak willed or morally deficient. Dr. Silkworth saw alcoholism as an illness, a manifestation of an allergy. The doctor's opinion gives us a rational basis from which to begin our examination of the problem of alcoholism. Our own experience validates his view of the physical aspects of alcoholism. When we begin to drink we develop a craving for more alcohol that is beyond our ability to control. Dr. Silkworth treated Bill W. for alcoholism the second, third and fourth times he was admitted to Town’s Hospital in New York. Dr. Silkworth explained to Bill the grave nature of his affliction. This information helped Bill to admit his powerlessness over alcohol so that he was open to the solution for alcoholism suggested to him by his high school friend Ebby T.

Bill progressed through the characteristic stages of alcoholism. Bath tub gin, three and four bottles a day, brought Bill to the brink of mental and physical collapse. Realizing that his drinking was preventing him from reaching his goal of success, Bill resolved to stop altogether and found that he could not. He was baffled as to why he could not stop drinking even though he desperately wanted to. He began to be caught up in the endless cycle of drinking to relieve severe withdrawal symptoms which quickly made matters worse.

Dr. Bob, a co-founder of A.A., was rebellious as a youth. He started drinking as a youth when he found a jug of booze and continued to enjoy drinking until in his college years when it began to cause him trouble. He attended Dartmouth College and received his medical degree from Brush University.
